Library Rug to Reflect Blueskin Bay

Dunedin, 14 August 2014 - A large rug, designed to incorporate the varied geographical features of the surrounding area, is to be unveiled at the Blueskin Bay Library on Saturday.

Blueskin Bay Librarian Louise Booth says the project, funded by the Dunedin City Council's Creative Communities Scheme, began last year under the direction of artist Janet De Wagt.

"Janet has done a lot of community arts projects both here and in the UK, and has previously had funding from the Creative Communities Scheme for similar projects, which made the process a lot easier."

The large, three-dimensional rag rug has been made up of a whole range of donated fabric from around New Zealand, including old school ties.

"It has been a fantastic community effort with many people adding to the rug. Both the Warrington and Waitati Schools got involved and we also held community workshops where people crafted patches to go on the rug.

"There was also a core group of several women who put many hours into the project."

Ms de Wagt says she found tasks to suit the ages and skills of all the helpers involved.

"The rug features the bay and landmarks that are familiar to the locals - from school children through to retirees."

In terms of size the rug will fit nicely into the Blueskin Bay Library's children's area.

It will be handed over to the Blueskin Bay Library at a public ceremony on Saturday, 16 August at 12pm, preceded by a celebratory final workshop at 10am.
