Vision for the Pomahaka Catchment
A new NZ Landcare Trust report, 'Pomahaka Catchment: Issues and Options to Improve Water Quality' is the result of a one year initiative working with farmers and landowners within the Pomahaka catchment in Otago. The
new report identifies water quality issues highlighted by the farming community and suggests good land management
options that can be implemented to help make improvements.
The report includes a general catchment description that clearly identifies the problems facing the area - identified by
Otago Regional Council as a 'hot spot' due to poor water quality. The latest water quality information is outlined in
the report, from scientists at Otago Regional Council, along with up to date details of the relevant rules and
regulations from both Fonterra and Otago Regional Council. A key section of the report identifies issues and options
that are available to farmers, broken down by topic. These include river management, riparian management, high country
management, wintering, nutrient management, effluent, biodiversity, weeds and pests, and water quality and monitoring.
This scoping project was supported with funding from the Ministry for Primary Industries Sustainable Farming Fund, with
additional support from Beef + Lamb NZ and DairyNZ.
