Horizons welcomes Whanganui River treaty settlement
Horizons representatives welcome the Whanganui River treaty settlement, which was ratified by iwi members at Ranana Marae earlier today.
Horizons councillor Rod Pearce, who represents Wanganui along with councilor David Cotton, noted the collaborative process adopted for the agreement to come to fruition.
“We would like to acknowledge the high level of engagement from both crown and iwi throughout this process, enabling Horizons representatives to actively participate in settlement discussions,” said Mr Pearce.
He also referred to the unique agreement made as part of the settlement for the Whanganui River to be its own legal entity.
“It is pleasing to see such a long standing claim settled, especially with the use of an innovative solution to complex issues.”
As part of the agreement a Whole of River Strategy will also be created which will identify issues for the health and well-being of the river and how these will be addressed. Horizons Regional Council will be involved in this strategy, which will compliment the One Plan.
“Maintaining the health and wellbeing of the Whanganui River is key,
“The Whole of River Strategy will be used as a platform to do this, as it will recognise the social, cultural and recreational importance of the river for iwi and the wider community,” said Horizons councilor David Cotton.
Horizons representatives attended the signing at Ranana Marae this morning.
