AA delighted at next step for Transmission Gully
Transmission Gully will create a second, safer and faster route between Wellington and the rest of the North Island, says the AA.
It was announced today that construction of the long-awaited highway will begin later this year.
"After decades of discussion and delays, it is fantastic to know that the highway is about to start actually taking shape," says AA Wellington District Chairman Michael Gross.
“The AA has been a long-time supporter of Transmission Gully and a huge number of Wellingtonians will be rapt to see progress happening in our region.
“Once Transmission Gully is complete and connected with the Wellington Northern Corridor through to Levin it is going to be a huge step forward for motorists and freight in the Lower North Island. It will also help make a more efficient link for freight travelling between the North and South Islands.
"Transmission Gully will provide quicker journeys, boost economic activity and be much safer. A modern multi-lane, divided highway will significantly reduce the number of fatal and serious crashes from the current route.
"Transmission Gully will also provide a much-needed alternative route in the event of a major natural disaster."
"The AA congratulates the Government on taking the next step towards this much-needed highway."
