On Wednesday 30 July Peoples Coffee will donate 50c from every cup sold at the Victoria University cafe Vicbooks to Wellington Rape Crisis.
Vicbooks manager Juilet Blyth was keen to support Wellington Rape Crisis after a spate of recent assaults near the campus and to raise awareness for the severely underfunded organisation.
Teaming up with the cafe's coffee supplier, Peoples Coffee, was an obvious choice. The locally roasted 100% fair trade coffee supplier has been committed to helping social initiatives both here in New Zealand and at coffee origin since its inception in 2004.
Liv Doogue, General Manager of Peoples Coffee
“Wellington Rape Crisis not only provide invaluable support to the survivors of sexual violence, but are a necessary voice committed to the education of gender inequality and sexual violence in our community. We hope by making a small contribution through each coffee sold we can help to create some awareness and dialogue among the students”
Juliet Blyth, Vicbooks Manager
“The Victoria University of Wellington Students’ Association chose to support Wellington Rape Crisis because they provide a vital service, and have been an incredible support in the wake of this year’s sexual assaults on students, in the Let Me Go Home’ community event and campaign that followed. We are saddened that WRC has to rely on public support to ensure they can continue to provide such a valuable service”
Notes for the Editor:
Peoples Coffee are a socially conscious business based in Newtown, Wellington that roast and supply 100% fair trade and organic coffee. Started by coffee geek Matt Lamason in 2004 while searching for a business model that could help create positive social change.
Peoples Coffee are one of only two New Zealand businesses to gain certification from the World Fair Trade Organisation, confirming that every element of the business supports the ten principles of Fair Trade. Their coffee is sourced exclusively from co-operatives made up of small lot coffee farms in countries like Ethiopia, Guatemala, Mexico and Colombia.
