Northcote Safe Cycle Route Consultation
A new cycle route on Auckland’s North Shore is proposed to make cycling and walking between Smales Farm and the
Northcote Ferry Terminal easier and safer.
The 5.2 kilometre Northcote Safe Cycle Route, which will form part of the Auckland Cycle Network, and involves a series
of proposed improvements for pedestrians and cyclists along Northcote Road, Lake Road and Queen Street from Taharoto
Road/Northcote Road intersection (near Smales Farm) to Northcote Point Ferry Terminal.
Auckland Transport is seeking feedback until 22 August. Open days will be held at the Northcote Library on Saturday 9
August from 11am to 2pm and Wednesday 13 August between 2pm and 5.30.
“The new cycle route involves significant safety improvements and is a further demonstration of Auckland Transport’s
commitment to improving facilities for cyclists and pedestrians,” says Matthew Rednall, Community Transport Manager at
Auckland Transport.
“There are several schools in the area so the proposed safe cycle route will also improve safety for hundreds of
children who walk or cycle to school.”
Steve Southall, Cycle Action’s champion for the Northcote-Birkenhead area has been working with Auckland Transport on
the project. “We’re very pleased to help create a safe cycling route in such a busy and car-dominated part of the lower
North Shore. By working together we believe Auckland Transport can achieve continuous safe routes through the difficult
sections of major roads and hugely improve transport choices,” he says.
Key elements of the Northcote Safe Cycle Route include:
• An off-road shared walking and cycling path on either side of Northcote Road from the Taharoto Road/Northcote Road
intersection to the Northcote Road/Ocean View Road/Lake Road intersection
• Improvements to walking and cycling facilities at the Northcote Road/Ocean View Road/Lake Road roundabout
• An on-road cycle lane on either side of Lake Road and an off-road shared walking and cycling path on the eastern side
of Lake Road from the Northcote Road/Ocean View Road/Lake Road intersection to Exmouth Road/Raleigh Road/Lake Road
intersection.
• Improvements to walking and cycling facilities at the Exmouth Road/Raleigh Road/Lake Road roundabout.
• An on-road cycle lane on the western side of Lake Road and an off-road shared walking and cycling path on the eastern
side of Lake Road from the Exmouth Road/Raleigh Road/Lake Road intersection to the Lake Road/Onewa Road intersection.
• Improvements to walking and cycling facilities at the Lake Road/Onewa Road/Queen Street intersection
• An on-road cycle lane on either side of Queen Street from the Onewa Road/Queen Street intersection to the entry to the
Northcote Point Ferry Terminal.
Subject to public consultation, work on the Northcote Safe Cycle Route is planned to start late-2015.
