TRAIN POWER

Auckland’s electric train system is supplied by two connections to Transpower's 220 kV national grid, one at Southdown Power Station and the other at Transpower's Penrose substation. Both connections are duplicated and one connection can supply the entire network if the other one fails, creating a high level of redundancy.

The level crossing bells and barriers are supplied from a secure signalling supply from Vector, with back up UPS systems (batteries and generators).

NETWORK SUMMARY for week ending 27 July 2014

ELECTRICITY

A total of six car v pole incidents occurred in Whitford, Point Chevalier, Blockhouse Bay, Waitakere, Mangere and Takanini* during the week. Two of these poles had to be fully replaced.

Power was isolated to four house fires during the week, in Green Bay, Albany, Swanson and Waikowhai.

Lines were brought down by over height trucks and branches coming down in four incidents. These were in Morningside, Greenhithe, Crown Hill and Flatbush. At Greenhithe, Vector worked with Telecom, as repairs to a Telecom asset had to be carried out before Vector’s asset could be reinstated. In Crown Hill, the lines were rehung.

Only one pipe strike was reported during the week, in Blockhouse Bay. Repairs were completed and no customers were affected.

A smell of gas was reported in Papakura, New Lynn, St Johns, Rotorua and Mairangi Bay during the week. In St Johns, our contractors checked for safety before referring the customer to a gas fitter for further repairs. No trace of gas was found after a safety check in Rotorua. In New Lynn, our contractors worked to repair a fault, with the asset referred to supervisors for further work.

PROJECTS

Vector is working alongside developers on a significant roading project at Wainui Road, Silverdale. Vector is working with the developers to relocate its strategic assets, including 33kV sub transmission lines and gas lines, as a new motorway interchange is under construction. The interchange will provide access to the Millwater Parkway residential area and Highgate Business Park.
