Wellington Railway Station strengthening to begin

Strengthening work on parts of the Wellington Railway Station is starting on Monday 28 July.

In the next few weeks, internal scaffolding will be erected in the atrium to provide temporary support to the ceiling. Once in place the construction work will take place in the ceiling cavity above the atrium to ensure public safety.

While the scaffolding will be prominent, there will still be full access for staff and the public – most of the work won’t even be visible, as it will take place in the ceiling space above.

This work provides a great opportunity for KiwiRail to preserve this iconic Wellington building for future generations.

“Wellington Railway Station is heritage listed, and we take its preservation and care very seriously, says KiwiRail Chief Executive, Peter Reidy.

The atrium ceiling will be protected during the repairs and the ceiling will be reinstated to its present high quality heritage finish.

“We have spent the past few months working closely with Wellington City Council and Heritage Places Trust to plan the work in a way that retains the integrity of the building while making the area safer in the event of a significant earthquake,” says Mr Reidy.

Renovation work will also be done on the clock that adorns the front of the station; this will be the first work on that part of the building since 1930.

A detailed engineering assessment of the building revealed work was needed to upgrade the ticket hall atrium roof in the station as it has been assessed as earthquake prone.
