Stormwater management and earthquake recovery key focus
Stormwater management and earthquake recovery key focus for water management meeting
The Christchurch-West Melton Zone Committee will hold its monthly water management public meeting on Thursday 24 July (starting at 5pm).
The committee will begin the meeting by offering members of the public a chance to contribute, if they wish, and this will be followed by a discussion on the proposed Water Related Services Bylaw.
The Christchurch City Council has released the proposed Bylaw for public feedback prior to 15 August. The committee has been working with the council since late last year to provide advice and ensure it is consistent with the community’s aspirations for water management in the zone.
The proposed Bylaw replaces the 2008 version which was required to be reviewed according to the Local Government Act. The changes mainly relate to water supply, wastewater, and stormwater.
Next, the committee will discuss how it can engage with the community on important urban water management issues such as stormwater management and water quality improvement initiatives.
Following this, the committee will receive an update on the progress and implementation of the Natural Environment Recovery Programme NERP). The NERP gives direction for the recovery of the natural environment following the earthquake with projects that address key issues and provide enhancement opportunities.
The NERP links and integrates with zone committee water management programmes in the Christchurch West Melton, Banks Peninsula and Waimakariri zones. Earlier this month the zone committee was represented at a stakeholder forum where updates were provided on the Te Papa Ōtākaro/Avon River Precinct project, water quality and ecosystem health, the Waitākiri Sanctuary project, as well as community gardens and bird populations since the earthquakes.
The committee will finish the meeting with an update from Environment Canterbury on the progress being made to implement the local on-the-ground actions outlined in its programme for water management and review its own water management programme and priorities.
