Napier City Council Wins Top Award

Napier City Council Wins Top Award

22 July 2014

Napier City Council took out the top award at the inaugural Local Government New Zealand Excellence Awards in Nelson last night.

The award, for ‘Community Event of the Year’ was in recognition of Council’s support of the Tremains Art Deco Weekend.

The prestigious award recognised events that have engaged the local community, drawn attendance from outside the region and received positive exposure on a national or international stage.

“It’s fabulous to have recognition for what has become an iconic event in Napier,” said Deputy Mayor Faye White.

Now in its 27th year, the world-famous Tremains Art Deco Weekend attracts around 40,000 people to its showcase of history, culture, music and fashion.

“Even after 27 years, Art Deco Weekend is continuing to grow and delight visitors and locals alike. We are very proud of it,” Ms White said.

Art Deco Trust General Manager Sally Jackson said the award was an excellent example of community and council partnership.

“Napier City Council has worked alongside us for many years and has helped us achieve recognition on a national and international level. Tremains Art Deco Weekend contributes significantly to the local economy as well as having a positive impact on the city’s civic pride.”

LGNZ said: “Napier City Council’s Tremains Art Deco Weekend won LGNZ Community Event of the Year, for its enduring appeal bringing more than 35,000 people to the community each year for a festival of architecture, fashion, outdoor concerts and vintage car parades. Napier City Council works in close partnership with non-profit Art Deco Trust on planning and implementation of the event, with private sector sponsors from local businesses and community groups to national companies such as real estate firm Tremains, Air New Zealand, TSB Bank and AMI Insurance.”

The judging panel comprised of BERL Chief Economist Dr Ganesh Nana, former Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast and Chair of NZCID John Rae.

The win caps off a successful year for Napier City Council– who won the best website redevelopment award at the Association for Local Government Information Management Web and Digital Symposium awards in May.
