Community backed Cycleway to be Trialled - Generation Zero
Youth group, Generation Zero, are pleased that Auckland Transport are responding to the over 100 business and 2500
people who signed up in support of separated cycleways on Krd by announcing that they will trial protected bicycle lanes
within the next 12 months.
Cycling spokesperson, Emma McInnes; “This is a great victory for the local community of Krd who overwhelmingly supported
the campaign from the very start.”
Generation Zero launched the campaign in May asking for the Waitemata Local Board, Auckland Council and Auckland
Transport to please work together to develop, fund and implement a plan to install separated cycle lanes along the
length of Karangahape Road. The campaign received over 2500 signatures to the petition and had over 100 businesses
support the proposal.
Ms McInnes; “Karangahape road is the perfect place to trial separated cycleways as it’s the linchpin that connects the
central city cycling network. The road is highly used but unfortunately unsafe with three of the most dangerous
intersections in New Zealand.”
Waitemata local board member Vernon Tava, overseeing the Karangahape Local Board Plan, confirmed yesterday that Auckland
Transport would trial separated cycleways within the next 12 months.
“An important part of the campaign was getting businesses on board, which is why we showed them the major boost in
retail spending from similar cycling projects overseas” explained Ms McInnes.
“The next step will be to make sure the trial succeeds and the community of Krd experiences the real benefits that
cycling can bring to our streets in Auckland. This will hopefully show the way for the rest of the city. The next steps
being separated cycleways on Ponsonby Road and Grafton Gore Road.”
