Hamilton Mayor calls former Hamiltonians to celebrate 150th anniversary

Hamilton Mayor Julie Hardaker is calling all former Hamiltonians across New Zealand back to the city next month to get amongst a one-off party 150 years in the making.

The Hamilton Anniversary Gala Ball, to be held on Saturday 23 August, will celebrate Hamilton’s 150th anniversary and the establishment of the city’s two key tertiary education institutions, and the city’s Mayor is keen to see New Zealander’s with ties to Hamilton head back for the occasion.

“This is an exciting year for our city and its people,” says Hamilton Mayor, Julie Hardaker.

“We have such a rich and interesting history as well as an exciting and promising future, and the ball is a great opportunity for Hamiltonians and those who have ties to the community to come together and celebrate that.”

“The ball promises to be a glamorous and sophisticated evening of fine wine, food, music, dance and entertainment.”

Alongside the 150 years that have passed since the first British settlers arrived in Hamilton city, it’s been 90 years since the first classes were taught out of Wintec’s heritage building, Wintec House and 50 years since the University of Waikato opened its doors.

Wintec’s chief executive, Mark Flowers say the ball is a chance to acknowledge, alongside the Hamilton community, how far the city has come and where it’s headed.

“It’s a great feeling to know that we’ve been in the community for such a long time, connecting with employers, helping to build our local economy and shaping people’s futures.

“The city and our workforce has changed significantly since we started out in 1924 and it’s a privilege to be part of that.

University of Waikato Vice-Chancellor Professor Roy Crawford says many university alumni have been part of this year’s 50th celebrations and he is looking forward to seeing other alumni at the ball.

“This is their chance to celebrate with us and with the city; by being part of this occasion they are reinforcing the fact that universities are important components of strong communities.”

Among the entertainment for the evening will be by jazz band, Roger Fox and a range of local entertainers.

Free dance lessons will be held throughout the city for ticket holders in the lead up to the event.
