Spectacular Crash Demonstration
Speed kills - Auckland Transport (AT) will be dropping cars from a crane this weekend to dramatically show the carnage caused by a head-on crash at 60km/h.
With support from Auckland Cranes, Auckland Transport will be demonstrating the impact of speed-related crashes at the CRC Speedshow at the Auckland Showgrounds in Greenlane on 19 and 20 July.
Auckland Transport hopes the event will raise awareness of the dangers of speeding and encourage people to look more closely at vehicle safety.
Two cars will be dropped from 14 metres to provide a full picture of likely passenger injuries and indicate how safe vehicles are likely to be in the event of a speed-related crash.
AT Community Transport Manager Matthew Rednall says the spectacular show will provide a unique opportunity for drivers to understand the risks associated with driving at speed, while also encouraging them to make safe motoring a top priority.
Every year, speed is a contributing factor in more than 100 fatal crashes. “This simulated crash will show that no matter what causes a crash; vehicle speed directly affects the force of impact.”
The simulation will also demonstrate how vehicle safety can minimise the occurrence and consequences of car accidents. Car safety ratings assist drivers in making decisions to purchase cars that offer the best protection in case of a crash. Modern cars also have a comprehensive set of safety features, such as airbags, energy-absorbing material and stability control systems that will reduce the risks of injury and in some cases prevent death in a serious crash.
“It’s simple, the faster you go, the greater the chance of killing yourself or someone else,” says Mr Rednall.
