The Auckland Marathon might still be a few months away, but its preparation kicks off this weekend with the Unitec Run & Walk series.
The first event in the series will be held on Sunday 13 July at Unitec’s Mount Albert campus. Registration opens at 7.30am and the first events start at 9am.
While the series is the official lead-up to the Auckland Marathon, it is open to runners and walkers of all fitness levels, including kids from age seven on.
The distances for the first event are –
2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10km run or walk
2km kids run or walk
Unitec’s staff and students from its sport and osteopathy departments will be supporting participants throughout the series.
Osteopathy is great for preventing and treating injuries throughout the season. Students doing their Master of Osteopathy will be providing post-race recovery treatments after every event, for a gold coin donation going to The Heart Foundation.
Staff experts will also be providing advice about nutrition, pacing, recovery and motivation, to be featured on the series’ website www.runwalk.co.nz.
While it is the official fitness mate for all Run & Walk participants, Unitec has also been inspiring its own staff and students through an internal ‘bring a mate’ campaign.
As a result, nearly 200 of them will be joining in the excitement, running or walking with their fitness mate.
The full schedule of Unitec Run & Walk event series:
• July 13, at Unitec in Mt Albert.
• August 3, Alexandra Park, Greenlane.
• August 24, Navy Sports Field, Ngataringa, Devonport.
• September 14, Highbrook Business Park, Highbrook.
• October 5, Barry Curtis Park, Botany.
