Bus shelter trial kicks off
The overbridge on Symonds Street has had a facelift with the addition of three prototype bus shelters. The shelters have
been installed as part of a trial being run by Auckland Transport (AT).
AT’s Group Manager Public Transport Mark Lambert wants people to go and see for themselves how the shelters look and
feel.
“This is a great opportunity to have a say on the type of bus shelter design or designs that will ultimately be rolled
out across Auckland. Already the anecdotal feedback we are receiving is very encouraging and we expect a lot of interest
during the consultation period.”
Auckland’s bus network currently has a variety of different bus shelter designs of varying quality and usability.
Mr Lambert says Auckland Transport is looking to create a more recognisable bus network with a standardised shelter
design or suite of designs that are attractive, functional and adaptable to most bus stop locations and conditions.
“We want people to enjoy, not endure, their wait for the bus, and what better way to do this than asking how we can
improve the experience for our customers.”
All the trial shelters are a modular design so they can be installed in various sizes, layouts and locations. The trial
will also be used to assess how the shelters perform against criteria, such as value for money, durability, and ease of
construction.
Auckland Transport is also looking at how cycle parking, retail kiosks, and technology might be incorporated into new
shelter designs.
