Kapiti's bright and clean energy future could be fouled forever
“The company responsible for spilling oil on Kapiti beaches in 2010 has applied to drill a further seven wells in the same area. The Environmental Protection Authority is calling for public submissions on OMV’s application and Frack free Kapiti has asked the EPA to hold a Public Information Session in Kapiti.
We know from experience, that a spill from OMV’s Maari oil field* will land on Kapiti beaches, that’s a certainty. We know that as the number of wells drilled increases, so does the risk of accidental spill increase.
What we don’t know is how our coastal communities will be impacted by a large accidental spill or how Kapiti Island will be affected, how the birdlife will fare and what the affects will be on the marine reserve and the coast generally.
This information needs to be make available in our community and we need time to learn, discuss and decide whether we want to take such serious risks; for ourselves, for our environment and for future generations.
Frack free Kapiti has written to the EPA and we suggest other groups and individuals concerned about multiple well developments between Farewell Spit and Taranaki do the same. Kapiti’s bright and clean energy future could be forever fouled by just one more off shore accident”.
