Nominations sought for region's Environmental Awards

Taranaki’s flagship Environmental Awards are back for 2014 and nominations close at the end of August.

The Taranaki Regional Council Environmental Awards were revamped last year to allow greater recognition at a higher-profile presentation ceremony. The new-look awards include more categories, a clearer focus on why awards are made, and corporate sponsorship.

The awards were inaugurated in 1993, with 205 presented over the following two decades.

Nominations close at 5pm on Friday 29 August, and can be made at www.trc.govt.nz/environmental-awards/.

Categories are:
• Environmental leadership in business (public or private) – award sponsored by Port Taranaki Ltd.
• Environmental leadership in dairy farming – award sponsored by Fonterra.
• Environmental leadership in land management – award sponsored by Dow AgroSciences.
• Environmental action in the community – award sponsored by Methanex.
• Environmental action in education – award sponsored by Taranaki Daily News.

The presentations will be made at an early-evening catered function in New Plymouth in November.

“The awards celebrate the fact that the region’s generally good-quality environment is not simply an accident, but the result of hard work across all sectors of the Taranaki community,” says the Council Chairman, David MacLeod.

“We’re pleased that some of the key players in Taranaki industry and commerce have partnered us as sponsors for these awards,” he says. “They as much as us understand the importance of sound environmental stewardship, and why the region should celebrate its environmental achievers.”
