Heretaunga Street West 200 block upgrade begins
Hastings District Council has begun an upgrade of the Heretaunga Street West 200 block in the CBD. The block runs from
King Street to Market Street and the work is expected to take around 14 weeks.
The project includes installation of stormwater pipes, kerb and channeling and new paving and lighting. During the
construction period, Unison will take the opportunity to upgrade their power infrastructure.
Hastings District Councillor Sandra Hazlehurst says “This project has been on the drawing boards since 2008/9. Retailers
were struggling with the economic downturn at that time and requested that the project be shelved due to the disruption
that it would cause to their businesses. The retailers in the 200 west block have now requested that the project is
completed prior to this Christmas.”
Sandra Hazlehurst says “Due to the type of work being undertaken, it is inevitable that there will be some disruption
for shoppers and businesses along the street. The contractors will endeavour to minimise the impact on the businesses
during the construction period. To ensure the minimum of inconvenience to shoppers, the contractors will install the new
paving between 4pm and 10pm.”
Sandra Hazlehurst says “One side of the street will always be open to traffic and for parking. During the footpath
reconstruction, a carpet will be laid to ensure that there is a clean surface for shoppers.”
“The completion of the upgrade of the 200 west block will allow Council to meet its goal of revitalizing the six core
CBD blocks,” Sandra Hazlehurst says.
The project started at the King Street intersection and the contractors will work down the northern side of Heretaunga
Street. Work on the southern side is programmed to commence on August 11th and the whole project is expected to be
complete by September 26th.
