City Care brings Christmas spirit back to Christchurch City streets

City Care will ensure Christchurch's street Christmas decorations are installed as usual this year by underwriting the installation costs.

Chief Executive Onno Mulder says, "We understand Christchurch City Council's decision not to pay about $55,000 to install the decorations this year, but we want to make sure the people of Christchurch can enjoy the festive atmosphere this Christmas.

"We have offered to underwrite the costs of installation and removal of the decorations, and Council has accepted our offer.

"We think it's important to be able to celebrate Christmas in this way along with the rest of the country. We're pleased to be able to step up for the people of Christchurch by providing this community service," said Onno Mulder.

"This is a fantastic offer from City Care and I'm delighted to see that Christmas decorations will go ahead," said Christchurch Deputy Mayor Vicki Buck.

"This adds to the number of people who have already generously donated money towards the cost of putting up the decorations," said the Deputy Mayor.

Vicki Buck said a number of companies and individuals had already offered support including Christchurch International Airport, Scenic Circle, Hairy Lemon, Jonny Schwass, Men at Work and the Mike Pero Foundation.

"They have all been fantastic," said the Deputy Mayor.

"If there is more support, then the surplus can be used for ensuring families who need it get a bit of extra help at Christmas," she said.

City Care is heavily involved in the Christchurch rebuild through its participation in infrastructure repair and rebuild projects.
