Construction tender awarded for Taita Centre
The construction tender for the Taita Sport & Community Centre has been awarded to Hawkins Construction.
Hawkins has worked on similar developments in the Wellington region, such as Queen Margaret College’s gymnasium, and is
an experienced and respected contractor. The building has been designed by Warren & Mahoney Architects and project managed by Beca. A number of local sub-contractors will work on the site.
Construction is due to begin in August with the expected completion date being August 2015, ahead of initial
expectations.
The total cost of the project is $12 million. The Centre will include:
• Five indoor sports courts
• 11 outdoor netball courts
• A new library
• Multi-purpose meeting rooms and activity spaces for social, education and community activities
• A community fitness centre, and
• Small leasable offices and hot desks for community use.
The Taita Sport & Community Centre is a project managed by The Community Facilities Trust (CFT), a Council-controlled organisation.
Alister Skene, CFT Chairman says, “This is our first project to reach the construction stage and will be followed by a
number of others in the next two years. We are delighted to be able to progress the initial work started by Council and
the community, and bring these plans to life.
“I would particularly like to thank our main funding partners, the Pelorus Trust, Lottery Grants Board, Hutt City
Council, and especially all those who have made contributions such as sponsoring a seat in the Centre”
Hutt City Mayor, Ray Wallace says, “The Taita Sport & Community Centre will make a real difference to the community.
“It will provide a much needed indoor sports centre for the Hutt Valley and will attract events that will benefit the
local economy. Importantly, it will also create a heart in the suburb of Taita; places where people can play sport,
learn, connect with social services and engage with their community.”
