SH36 at Mangorewa Gorge closed Thursday June 26
State Highway 36 (SH36) at Mangorewa Gorge will be closed from 9am until 4pm tomorrow (June 26) to allow contractors to finish important safety works in the area.
The NZ Transport Agency advises motorists wishing to travel between Tauranga and Rotorua during the closure to use State Highway 2 (SH2) /State Highway 33 (SH33) via Te Puke.
The section of SH36 was closed today so contractors could begin clearing away soft soil and vegetation to prevent slips, however wet weather prevented the work from being finished.
Weather permitting, a helicopter carrying a monsoon bucket will be used to drop upwards of 5000 litres on the road during tomorrow’s closure, sluicing away soft soil and vegetation above the highway.
If the weather conditions are not right for the helicopter the work will take place on next clear day.
The Transport Agency apologises for any inconvenience and thanks motorists for their understanding while these important safety works are carried out.
