Council to auction Mayoral Daimler
The Christchurch City Council today unanimously agreed to publicly auction the Mayoral Daimler and put the sale proceeds
into the Christchurch Earthquake Mayoral Relief Fund.
The grey 1970 Daimler was retired from public duty in 1996 and will be advertised for public auction on the Trademe
website tomorrow for two weeks.
“This has been sitting on our books for a long time and we need to make a decision to get rid of it,” says Mayor Lianne
Dalziel. “We offered it to the FerrymeadHeritage Park and the RNZAF Airforce Museum at Wigram but they didn’t want it.”
On retiring the limousine from service in 1996, the Council agreed to sell it by public tender. However by November that
year, it had decided to retain the car “as an important part of the city’s civic history”, and loaned it to the RNZAF
Airforce Museum at Wigram.
It stayed in the Airforce Museum until 2008 when it was returned to the Council, which put it in storage at no cost. The
limousine has a Jaguar XK 420 engine based on a 1940s design, and is not registered or warranted. It will be sold ‘as
is, where is’.
