At about 3.15pm on Saturday 21st
June 2014 Police were made aware that children had located a
WW2 Grenade on a residential house site near Ngaruawahia.
Defence Force staff were despatched from Auckland and subsequently detonated the grenade on farmland. The area where the device was located is part of the old Ngaruawahia Military ranges from the 1940s.
Police cannot overemphasise the need to treat any military ordinance as being live and potentially lethal and advise that it should not be handled in any manner until it has been made safe by Defence Force personel.
The potential for a tragic outcome in this case was high. If you find anything such as grenades and ordinance call Police immediately and move people and animals out off the area.
