Council begins culvert removal in Dudley Creek
Christchurch City Council contractors will start removing a culvert from lower Dudley Creek today, which when completed will improve water flow.
Contractors will spend the next week removing the Guild Street culvert and carrying out bank stabilisation to create a wider channel.
The footbridge over the concrete culvert will also be removed and replaced with a new one. During this time the footbridge, and surrounding area, will be inaccessible. The new bridge is expected to be completed by early July.
Removal of the culvert and installation of the footbridge is one of the flood mitigation measures outlined in the Mayoral Flooding Taskforce’s technical report for the Flockton/Lower Dudley area.
Council Unit Manager Transport and Greenspace John Mackie says the targeted work complements other actions being carried out by the Council’s maintenance team.
“This work for lower Dudley Creek will improve the capacity of the stormwater network, acting as a further flood mitigation measure for this area. Detailed design is underway on the foot bridge and we are planning to start installation next week.”
