Council wins Green Ribbon Award
Christchurch City Council has won a major national environmental award for its Target Sustainability services.
The 2014 Green Ribbon Awards were announced by the Minister for the Environment, Hon Amy Adams, in Wellington last night.
Target Sustainability, which provides a range of free resource-efficiency services to businesses, was a joint winner in the “Minimising Our Waste” category.
Kevin Crutchley, Resource Efficiency Programme Manager, says: “The award is a significant endorsement for the services but, more importantly, it acknowledges the many Christchurch businesses and developers who have taken up the challenge to reduce their waste and become more energy and water efficient.
“Their ongoing achievements and success stories have helped to demonstrate the value of Target Sustainability to other organisations looking to become more resource efficient.
“We’re excited at the opportunity to help support the re-building of a resource-efficient city,” he says.
Target Sustainability is currently working with close to 100 commercial building projects representing more than 500,000 square metres of floor space. Prior to the earthquakes, there was about 450,000 square metres of floor space in Christchurch’s central business district.
In addition, the services are currently assisting around 60 businesses with waste reduction, energy efficiency and water-efficiency advice.
Target Sustainability is also working closely with the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) and the Christchurch Agency for Energy (CAfE). To date, the building projects Target Sustainability is assisting have received more than a combined $1.2 million of energy-efficiency advice or grants from these agencies.
Target Sustainability’s range of support to businesses includes self-help guides, an online recycling directory and tailored consultancy services. It has also developed freely accessible business guides on waste reduction, energy and water efficiency.
