New roundabout on Victoria Street and College Street to be remediated
Speed restrictions have been put back in place at the Victoria Street and College Street roundabout following safety
concerns.
Palmerston North City Council contracted Chris Gommans Contracting to construct the roundabout.
Roading manager Graeme Tong says unfortunately the central traffic island has been constructed smaller than designed and
offset to one side. The effect being motorists are not slowed, to the extent expected of the design, to ensure safe
operation for all users, particularly cyclists.
Furthermore the island on Victoria Ave traveling north from Te Awe Awe Street has also been constructed in the wrong
location thereby creating a pinch point for cyclists and vehicles.
“We became aware of the situation after cyclists raised concerns after it was built. A surveyor was deployed and issues
were confirmed.”
“In a bid to maintain safety we’ve placed a 30 kilometre an hour speed restriction on the intersection until the
situation is resolved.”
Mr Tong says Council has spoken with Chris Gommans Contracting and planning is underway to make improvements to the
intersection to ensure it is safe for all road users.
“Unfortunately, this will mean more disruption. I understand and appreciate the frustration this will cause however we
need to have the mistake corrected.”
The total cost of rework is expected to be in the vicinity of $35,000 and Palmerston North City Council is in
discussions with Chris Gommans Contracting in relation to costs.
