Lining up Jobs on M2PP Kāpiti Expressway for Whitireia And Weltec Students
On Monday 16 June, at the Whitireia Kāpiti Campus, building and construction and engineering students from Whitireia and WelTec will meet employers from the M2PP Expressway project.
The aim is to give students an opportunity to meet with and hear from employers about the jobs available and the kind of skills and attributes employers are looking for on the MacKays to Peka Peka Expressway major infrastructure project.
“We’ve been working with Alan Orange, the Project Manager for the M2PP Alliance who suggested we bring students up to have a look at and hear about the project and the jobs going,” said Don Campbell, Whitireia Chief Executive. “We hope coming out of this will be students getting jobs with a realistic view of what these will entail and a sense of the excitement of this major project.”
“This will be a fantastic opportunity for our students to learn more about the Expressway first hand from the employers involved in this major infrastructure project,” said Linda Sissons, WelTec Chief Executive. “We hope this will be the first of many interactions with the M2PP Alliance as our students graduate throughout the year.”
M2PP Project Manager Alan Orange said “the day will give students an opportunity to see progress on the Expressway, to view a DVD of the finished project and to meet with prospective employers face-to-face. The workforce is expected to build quickly from now on, rising to more than 500 jobs at its peak and with many more employed by supplier companies.”
Major earthmoving contractor on the project Stan Goodman from Goodman Contractors Limited said, “I am looking for people with the right skills but most importantly the right attitude, the willingness to turn up every day and work on whatever needs to be done. There are great opportunities here for people to get a start and go on to a good career in this industry. There’s a lot of work coming up in this region over the next 15-20 years and a chance to carve out a long term career.”
Whitireia and WelTec partner with industry to provide opportunities for students and graduates; this along with providing relevant programmes that meet industry needs, ensures success and provides career pathways for students into their chosen field.
