Sweetness Overload At Wakato Hospital NICU
It’s not only the gorgeous wee babies in Waikato Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) providing staff with their sweet fix this week.
The hospital’s NICU staff have been enjoying some sweet treats of the baked goods variety from local eatery The Girl on the Swing after being nominated as a deserving group to receive the shop’s daily leftovers.
And as delicious as the cupcakes and cakes they have received daily are, it’s the plethora of warm fuzzy comments on The Girl on the Swing’s Facebook page about the unit that has NICU charge nurse manager Christine Woolerton buzzing.
“It was so lovely to see the lovely unsolicited comments from our past mums come up when The Girl on the Swing announced NICU as being this week’s recipients,” she said.
“It’s great to see that we have provided a service to our community which has left a positive impression on the families, even years after their stay with us, that they think to nominate us for this kind of treat.”
With 368 likes on the Facebook status, one mother wrote: “Yay!!! What a brilliant idea...my boy spent the first month of his life in NICU and all the staff were sooooo amazing and supportive ... can't think of a more deserving bunch of people ...”
While another wrote: “Best possible place! They helped my son when he was born two years ago. What they do is beyond amazing!!”
Neonatal intensive care is the specialised medical and nursing care of newborn babies who are very premature or with health concerns.
The unit at Waikato Hospital is one of six level three (intensive care) newborn units throughout New Zealand and caters for babies from Waikato, the wider Midland health region and sometimes babies are transferred in by ambulance or rescue helicopter from parts of the country where a level three intensive neonatal unit is not available or the nearest unit is full.
Check out The Girl on the Swing’s Facebook page for all the wonderful feedback about NICU and the work they do, and to find out how to go about nominating charities, community groups and non-profit organisations for some of their cupcake and cake goodness.
