Detour at Kowai River opens SH1 to 4WD and freight vehicles
The NZ Transport Agency has opened a detour at the Kowai River near Leithfield, in North Canterbury, re-opening State Highway 1 to four-wheel drives and freight vehicles.
The Transport Agency’s Performance Manager Pete Connors says the highway remains closed to all cars travelling from Waikuku to Amberley and there is no suitable detour.
“Manned road blocks will remain overnight and if flood waters recede, the highway will be re-opened.”
