Canterbury Water Regional Committee reviewing its procedures
The next meeting of the Canterbury Water Regional Committee, on Tuesday 10 June, will consider how its operating
procedures and priorities might be refined to ensure greater effectiveness.
In February the committee agreed that after three-and-a-half years in operation, it would be appropriate to review how
it operates. A sub-committee was given the task of preparing a discussion paper, which will be presented at next week’s
meeting.
One element of the discussion will be whether the regional committee should be promoting and encouraging direct actions
towards achieving Canterbury Water Management Strategy targets.
The Regional Infrastructure Working Group will report to the committee on a review of the economic value of water for
hydropower and irrigation in South Canterbury, which it discussed during a recent field trip to Lake Tekapo.
The group recommended the review last year with the intention of identifying a distribution approach that acknowledges
Canterbury Water Management Strategy (CWMS) water quality and cultural objectives.
The Land Use and Water Quality Working Group will report to the meeting on its communications and engagement activities;
regional plan implementation and strategic developments.
A report from the Biodiversity and Ecosystems Working Group will also be received.
The meeting will finish with an update from each of the zone committee representatives.
