Wintry Blast Sets Record
YES, IT WAS CHILLY
Auckland residents survived their coldest start to winter on record this week.
Metservice meteorologist Liz Walsh said Auckland experienced its coldest May temperature on Wednesday morning (28 May),
when the needle hovered just above freezing at 0.9 degrees Celsius.
The last time the temperature hit the all-time low of 0.9C in May was in 1976, Walsh said.
NETWORK SUMMARY for week ending 1 June 2014
ELECTRICITY
Emergency services requested isolation of power to several house/building fires during the week, in Warkworth,
Whangateau, Point Chevalier and Otahuhu.
Trees touching powerlines caused lines to give off smoke in Narrow Neck during the week. Crews were dispatched to clear
away foliage.
Car v pole incidents occurred in Massey, Pakuranga, Kawakawa Bay, East Tamaki Heights and Glenfield during the week.
Damage was sustained to our network in the Glenfield incident only. Cars also struck pillars in Helensville and Torbay
Heights.
GAS
Six pipe strikes were reported during the week, in Hamilton, Otaki, Albany, Whangarei, Waiakae and Devonport. Entangled
tree roots had to be removed from the site of the Waiake incident.
A smell of gas was reported in Mangere and Grey Lynn during the week. Gas was isolated for safety, and the necessary
repairs were carried out.
PROJECTS
Works are progressing well at the Te Atatu substation site in preparation for the NZTA initiated SH16 upgrade works.
A pole was installed last week, to replace the existing steel tower which carries the 33kV line supplying the
substation. This will make way for the motorway widening.
The entire project at Te Atatu includes a new transformer and switchgear, which, when competed, will supply the northern
portal of the Waterview Tunnel.
The SH 16 works will be completed by mid-2016, prior to the opening of the tunnel.
