Winter Showtime
Winter Showtime
1 June – 31 July
Get your winter glad rags out of the closet because Auckland Live has everything you need to spice up winter in 2014.
Throughout June and July Auckland Live will be buzzing with great experiences for you and your family, warming the cockles with the best theatre, dance, cabaret, and opera. And for those who like a bit of ice, Paradice brings back the magic that only the Aotea Square Ice Rink can provide.
From 12 June – 20 July the Aotea Square Ice Rink returns for its third year adding a little winter playground to our city, this time with the added thrill of a brand NEW Ice Slide. At 35 metres long, and only in Auckland, the Ice Slide adds a new adrenaline rush for those who like to go fast, whether in a tube or on a sled. Winter just became a little more epic. For couples who want something a little different for date night it’s romantic. For a school holiday treat for families or for a group of your best mates it’s fast and it’s fun. The Ice Rink has themed evenings and weekends, music, demonstrations, and competitions. There’s something for everyone and it’s right in the heart of the city.
To enhance the romance and magic of Aotea Square and celebrate Auckland Live, Celery Productions present a beautiful outdoor installation called Live Lines. A sparkling canopy of moving arrows will create an interactive compass using light, sound, colour and movement. Live Lines covers an awe inspiring 50m of Aotea Square. Come and join the celebration from 12 June 2014, it’s free. From the award-winning production company best known for their festival Art in the Dark.
For those who like things a little steamier Auckland Live Presents the inaugural Auckland International Cabaret Season from 4 - 8 June. The Auckland Town Hall Concert Chamber transforms into a hotbed of decadence with three performances every night from the world’s hottest cabaret talents, including NY superstar Lady Rizo, the award winning Jersey Boys star Michael Griffiths and locals Julia Deans, Jennifer Ward-Lealand and The Modern Maori Quartet.
The whole family can enjoy free performances and workshops on Saturday mornings with the return of Pick & Mix. Every Saturday from 21 June to 6 September 2014 you can join in the fun with the Royal New Zealand Ballet, percussion group Strike or comedian magician Jared Fell. There’s something for everyone to get a taste of the performing arts.
There are also a plethora of International Acts coming to lure you out of the house. Shadowland Dance Theatre direct from the USA from 3 - 8 June, to international heart warming musical Annie from 13 June - Sunday 6 July to Bryan Batt, Broadway Star performing his one man Cabaret Spectacular Batt on a Hot Tin Roof. Winter also brings the excitement of the International Film Festival at Auckland’s iconic Civic Theatre.
And don’t forget The Wizard of Oz by NYTC, La Traviata by the New Zealand Opera, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Hoki Mai Tama Mā by Te Rehia Theatre Company to celebrate Matariki and your chance to catch MAMIL (Middle Aged Man In Lycra) the hilarious new one man show by one of New Zealand’s finest and most well known actors Mark Hadlow. And just to add that little bit extra get your fix of boutique shopping at the Auckland Art & Craft Fair.
Keep Jack Frost at bay with all the magic and adventure you can handle this winter. Skate amongst the buzz of Auckland city, get your adrenaline rush on the slide, steam it up with Cabaret and enjoy, music, dance and theatre with the best New Zealand has to offer.
There is so much to do this winter you won’t have time to be cold and miserable. Don’t let winter get you down and don’t wait for summer to get out and get amongst it. It’s all waiting for you in the heart of Auckland City. Going out is definitely the new staying in this winter.
