Community flood meetings commence as mitigation work continues

Community meetings in flood affected areas start tonight, with Little River residents able to learn more about proposed mitigation measures.

Throughout the next week engineers from the 18-strong Mayoral Taskforce for Flooding will front community meetings throughout the city, giving residents an opportunity to feedback and ask questions on the flood protection measures planned for their area.

The Taskforce’s technical report, released last week, contains detailed area reports and flood mitigation measures specific to the relevant catchment areas. The technical report including appendices A and B, can be viewed on the Council website at www.ccc.govt.nz/floodmitigation

The Flooding Taskforce has divided into eight teams:
• pumping
• bridging
• house wrapping
• strengthening communities
• dredging
• Council resolutions
• local area schemes
• maintenance.

Each team is focused on developing its own scope and a team approach to determine the costs and programmes of their activity.

Work has started on developing local area solutions in more detail, many of which will use a combination of mitigation activities.

Rates remission
A report recommending 100 per cent rates remission for the most heavily affected flood properties will be discussed at tomorrow’s Council meeting. The report starts on page 263 of the agenda.

Further information will be made available following the Council’s decision.

Work currently underway:

Channel widening / bank modification – Dudley Creek
Channel widening at Banks Avenue is progressing well. A Council arborist has been on site to advise on best practice for working around mature trees. The current team will begin widening Dudley Creek opposite 70 Banks Avenue from Wednesday 21 May. Another crew will start work along Banks Avenue before Friday.

Sediment removal – Dudley Creek
Sediment removal is continuing in the top section of Dudley Creek. The crew is at the end of Julius Terrace today and will move into Stapleton’s Road tomorrow.

Work completed this week:

Sediment removal – Dudley Creek
Approximately 300 millimetres depth of sediment has been removed from the channel through Julius Terrace.

An estimated 100 cubic metres of sediment has been removed so far, excavated from the creek bank downstream of the Hills/Shirley shops to Chancellor Street. This will allow for a faster flow within the creek.

Surveying – Shirley
The Council’s survey team has completed site work at the properties assessed as a priority for widening/maintenance. Schemes are being drawn up for the Council property team to discuss with impacted owners.

Ongoing work:
Council staff and contractors are continuing to speak with local residents on the extent of the work planned in the Dudley Creek area.

Targeted information database
The Taskforce is continuing to update its contact information database for all affected residents in the identified flood-prone areas. Once complete, this will allow the Council to relay up-to-date information to residents about flood mitigation work in each area, weather updates, temporary traffic management plans and other associated details.
