Collision a tragic reminder of the safety risks around level crossings
National rail safety charity TrackSAFE NZ said today’s level crossing collision on the West Coast, which resulted in the
deaths of two people, is a tragic reminder of the safety risks around level crossings.
Foundation Manager Megan Drayton says “Our thoughts are with all those involved, including the families of the deceased,
emergency services personnel at the scene and the train driver and other affected rail staff.”
“This is an absolute tragedy, and a timely reminder for all motorists in New Zealand to take care around level crossings
and to always ensure the railway lines are clear of trains before crossing the tracks.”
She says at level crossings controlled by either ‘Give Way’ or ‘Stop’ signs, motorists must slow down and be prepared to
stop – and treat the intersection in the same way as they would a road intersection protected by signs.
“People must look both ways up and down the tracks to check the railway lines are clear, wait for any approaching train
to pass before crossing and where there is more than one track, look again for trains coming in the opposite direction.
“People should only cross after they have checked the railway lines are clear of trains.”
TrackSAFE NZ is a charitable trust that aims to raise awareness about safety around the rail corridor and educate the
public on safe behaviour. The Trust is supported by KiwiRail, the NZ Transport Agency and Transdev Auckland.
