Tree planting at South New Brighton Park
Christchurch City Council is calling on volunteers to help plant 7000 trees and shrubs at South New Brighton Park to help regenerate the popular recreation area devastated by the earthquakes.
The plants, a mix of native species and exotic trees, will be planted in the park area where many mature trees were felled in March last year due to damage from the earthquakes.
Local Councillor David East says, “The trees were a valuable asset that sheltered the suburb to some degree and provided a well-used recreation area.
“So it’s important that there’s a replanting programme that uses a mix of exotics and natives.”
Cr East will attend one of the tree planting days to support the local community in the replanting.
The tree planting at South New Brighton Park was made possible due to a donation made by the Auckland Council to the Christchurch Earthquake Mayoral Relief Fund. These funds have contributed to the cost of the plants.
To help plant the trees on Sunday 25 May or Sunday 8 June, come to the South New Brighton Park at 10am on either day with sturdy footwear or gumboots, and bring a spade if you have one. However equipment will also be provided.
