Taumarunui Boil Water Notice Expected To Be Lifted Next Week
All going well Ruapehu District Council (RDC) is hoping that Taumarunui residents will be able to stop boiling their
drinking water by the end of next week.
The failure of final stage filters at the water treatment plant in Matapuna combined with the onset of winter has
required RDC to request residents of Taumarunui and Manunui to boil their drinking water since mid-March.
RDC Chief Executive, Peter Till, said that new parts for the filter unit had to be sourced from America which took some
time as the local agent in NZ had gone out of business.
“The new filter parts cleared customs on Friday and are expected on site in Taumarunui tomorrow,” he said.
“Repairing the filter is not an insignificant undertaking and requires the movement of tonnes of material including
different grades of filter material such as sand and pumice that sit on top of the pipes that need replacing.”
“Given there are no issues with the planned repairs we are anticipating that we will be able to lift the boil water
notice by the end of next week (Friday 30 May).”
Mr Till said that Council wanted to thank the residents of Taumarunui and Manunui for their patience and understanding
during this period.
“Although Council is very aware of the frustration the need to boil drinking water has caused with local communities,
our contractor Veolia Water are being very careful not to rush the repair job.”
“The lifting of the boil water notice will be widely promoted on Council’s website, social media, local radio, and
around Taumarunui with posters including in New World, the Four Square and other retail premises when it occurs,” he
said.
