Hands Across the Sand for CLEAN ENERGY
Today grassroots group Oil Free Otautahi will hold Hands Across the Sand for CLEAN ENERGY for the 3rd year running at New Brighton pier at 11:30am. This world-wide event is held to demonstrate the global demand for renewable energy and the resistance to dangerous fossil fuel extraction on land and in our oceans.
Around 70 people are expected to attend; including Green MP Mojo Mathers who will talk about New Zealand's green energy options. The crowd will join hands across the beach at noon to symbolise defence of our land and sea and support of action on climate change.
"Coming up to this year's election it is important to push our leaders to take a socially responsible stance on environmental issues and climate change. New Zealand is in the perfect position to transition to a green economy that safeguards our pristine ecology- we just need our government to take some initiative." Says Siana Fitzjohn, an organiser of Oil Free Otautahi.
"This event demonstrates just how passionate our local community is about the environment that we'll pass on to future generations. The new evidence on climate change suggests that the next few decades are an age of climate responsibility- countries like New Zealand should be leading the charge." Says Bridget White, activist and high school student at Ao Tawhiti Unlimited Discovery.
