St Lukes upgrade a major milestone for Western Ring Route – AA

The AA says that today’s launch of the SH16 St Lukes to Great North Rd upgrade is another major milestone in the development of Auckland’s transport network.

The upgrade is the final project linked to the Western Ring Route (WRR) and AA spokesperson Barney Irvine said that Aucklanders were now starting to understand the impact the WRR would have on their city.

“As we start to see these projects come out of the ground, people are getting a sense of just what a difference this will make when it comes to easing congestion, reducing travel times and supporting economic growth,” Mr Irvine said. “Linking up SH16 and SH20, seamlessly connecting the CBD and the airport, and providing an alternative to SH1 for travel across the isthmus will have huge benefits.”

Mr Irvine added today’s launch was made all the sweeter by yesterday’s Budget announcement of $375 million in new capital funding to accelerate key transport infrastructure projects in Auckland.

“It’s reassuring to see the Government making good on its commitment to keep Auckland moving,” said Mr Irvine. “Of course, it’s not just about freeing up cars and freight – we also look forward to more investment in Auckland’s public transport and active modes.”

In the meantime, the AA encourages motorists using SH16 and the surrounding arterial network to be patient with ongoing roadworks.

“Delays can be frustrating, but it’s short term pain for long term gain,” said Mr Irvine. “Come 2017, when the WRR is complete, the network’s going to be humming.”
