Enjoy Top College Rugby at Porirua Park

Porirua City Council is partnering with College Sport Wellington to bring the Wellington leg of the Tranzit Coachlines 1st XV Festival to Porirua Park.

Wellington College, St Patrick’s, Silverstream, Scots and Naenae Colleges play Gisborne, Palmerston North, Hastings and Napier Boys Highs in a three weekend festival of top level college rugby.

Three games will play at Porirua Park on Saturday 17 May kicking off with Naenae vs Gisborne Boys at 12.05pm followed by Scots vs Napier Boys at 1.35pm and Silverstream vs Hastings Boys at 3.05pm. The Hurricanes have released 12 players during the festival weekend to support the teams on and off the fields and Wellington College vs Palmerston North Boys play the curtain raiser for the Hurricanes at 5.05pm on Friday 16 May at Westpac Stadium.

All the games will be screened live on SKY Rugby Channel.

Dave Mackenzie College Sport Wellington Sport Manager, says rugby is the most popular sport across the four main Porirua secondary schools, so it is great to bring quality games to a community that loves the game.

“Porirua Park is our venue of choice for rugby matches of significance as it provides an outstanding surface, great spectator viewing and player hosting facilities with the support of North’s Rugby Club.”

He says Porirua Park will be the home of all significant Secondary School rugby in 2014, not only hosting the Tranzit Coachlines 1st XV Festival, but also the Premier 1 Final, Co-Ed Cup Final, and NZ Schools Test matches later in the year.

“This has only been achieved with the support of Porirua City Council and their ground staff.”

Mayor Nick Leggett says he expects there will be plenty of local support at the games with Porirua a passionate rugby supporting community.

“Porirua Park is the home ground and nursery for many representative players including Jerry Collins, Tamati Ellison, John Schwalgler, TJ Perenara, Alapati Leiua, Fafili Levave and Robert Fruen to name a few.”
