SCAPE Public Art’s The Stencil Art Project adds creativity and life to Christchurch through Youth Street Art
SCAPE Public Art and Westpac’s The Stencil Art Project is well under way in Christchurch and is shaping up to be a huge
success. The Stencil Art Project invites schools and community groups to get involved in the production of street art in
the city, where the young people involved develop their own self-portrait stencil and spray it up as a collaborative
artwork on The Terrace Construction Hoardings in Re:START Mall, before or on 22 May 2014. The Stencil Art Project began
in mid-April and the site is now vibrant with the art of young people of Christchurch for all to see.
Sophie Pascoe, Westpac Ambassador, is heading down to The Terrace Construction Hoardings in Re:START Mall to spray up
her stencil on 20 May. “I can’t wait to see the amazing art that the young people of Christchurch have already sprayed
up and to be a part of The Stencil Art Project too”, Pascoe said. In April, The Stencil Art Project was also supported
by Richie McCaw, Westpac Ambassador, whose stencil will be sprayed up among the numerous faces of the youth of
Christchurch on The Terrace Construction Hoardings.
Westpac, who is SCAPE Public Art’s platinum sponsor, has been a valuable partner in the development and promotion of The
Stencil Art Project and is excited to have an incredible display of youth public art right outside its windows at its
new office location at Re:START Mall.
“It’s been great to have the support of Richie McCaw and Sophie Pascoe for The Stencil Art Project,” Deborah McCormick,
the Director of SCAPE Public Art says. “We hope the young people of Christchurch have been inspired by their involvement
with public art in the city and will go down to The Terrace Construction Hoardings to see their art next to Sophie’s and
Richie’s”.
The main drive behind The Stencil Art Project is to give young people of Christchurch a voice in their city and to
encourage the productive creation of street art. This project brings young people together, encouraging creativity and
collaboration in order to produce an incredible array of artwork in the heart of Christchurch. There have been numerous
schools and community groups involved so far, including Heaton Normal Intermediate School, Papanui High School, St
Margaret’s College, Rangi Ruru Girls School, Westburn School and Homespun Learning Group.
The Stencil Art Project will be complete by the end of May 2014, whereby all the stencils made will have been sprayed up
on The Terrace Hoardings in Re:START Mall on Cashel Street.
