The Warehouse Wellington Zoofari welcomes Corinna School

This week Wellington Zoo welcomes Corinna School from Porirua to the Warehouse Wellington Zoofari programme. The Warehouse Zoofari is a partnership between Wellington Zoo and The Warehouse that assists local low-decile schools to experience conservation-based learning programmes at the Zoo.

Over $25,000 was raised in The Warehouse’s Wellington region stores in December to assist with the costs of learning sessions at Wellington Zoo. Schools from around the Wellington region were invited to apply, and 16 schools will visit the Zoo as part of the 2014 programme.

“Wellington Zoo is thrilled to welcome Corinna School to the Warehouse Wellington Zoofari programme,” said Karen Fifield, Wellington Zoo Chief Executive.

“I’m very proud of this initiative and the amazing level of support we’ve received from The Warehouse. Wellington Zoo has also signed a Community Partnership Agreement with NZ Bus, operator of Go Wellington and Valley Flyer, to provide transport for The Warehouse Zoofari school visits.”

“All Wellington kids should be able to visit their Zoo and connect with nature, and together we’ve taken positive steps forward in providing that opportunity.”

75 students from Corinna School visited Wellington Zoo on Monday 12 May for their Zoofari learning session.

They are joined by 15 other schools in 2014: Kahurangi School and St Anne’s School from Wellington City; Pukeatua Primary and Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Ara Whanui from Lower Hutt; Porirua East School, Cannons Creek School, Maraeroa School, Russell School, Titahi Bay School, Titahi Bay North, Rangikura School, Corinna School, Brandon Intermediate and Glenview School from Porirua; and Ōtaki Primary.

Nearly 10,000 students from over 250 schools visited Wellington Zoo in 2013 to participate in Ministry of Education Learning Experiences Outside the Classroom (LEOTC) programmes.
