Concert coming up on 25 May 2013. Auckland Wind Orchestra
The Auckland Youth Symphonic Band and the Auckland Wind Orchestra will be presenting a concert on 25 May at the
Centennial Theatre, Auckland Grammar School, 525 Mountain Road, Epsom, starting at 2.30pm.
For those who don't know who these two orchestras are, a little background information may help.
Auckland Youth Symphonic Band
The Auckland Youth Symphonic Band (AYSB) gives young instrumentalists the opportunity to play in a bigger group than
many schools can muster. The players come from Intermediate and Secondary Schools from Whangapararoa to Manurewa, with a
few old hands from University and the work-force. The conductor, Rod McLeay, has conducted the Band since 1977, and
finds it great fun.
Auckland Wind Orchestra
The Auckland Wind Orchestra (AWO) aims to provide performance opportunities to brass, woodwind and percussion players
throughout the Auckland region. The orchestra performs a broad range of musical styles with a special focus on original
wind music. Our players come from all walks of life, united by the desire to have fun while making great music. The AWO
is conducted by Hamish Arthur – an itinerant music tutor working in several secondary schools throughout Auckland
teaching brass and directing Concert Bands and Jazz Bands.
Once a year both groups join forces to present a combined concert. The AYSB will play the first half and the AWO will
play after the intermission.
This year the concert has been crafted to particularly appeal to children and families and is entitled "An Afternoon at
the Movies". It will feature music from popular films and stage shows which will be well known to children and adults
alike.
Included in the repertoire will be music from:
Lord of the Rings
The Sorcerer's Apprentice
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Chorale from the Organ Symphony
Somewhere
Frozen
Harry Potter
and many more.
Tickets can be purchased online through Eventfinder - search "An Afternoon at the Movies". Admission is very reasonable
at $10 for adults and $5 for children. Door sales will also be available.
