Capital attractions open doors to city’s residents
Wellington Open Day is back and offering yet another golden opportunity for residents to get to know their city.
Experience Our Space multimedia rides at Te Papa, learn how to make a mojito at Motel Bar or relive past glory and get
inspired for the 2015 Cricket World Cup at New Zealand Cricket Museum – these are just some of the activities available
to Wellington’s residents as part of Wellington Open Day.
The event, now in its fourth year, sees 20 of the city’s visitor attractions and venues open their doors for a gold coin
donation on Sunday May 25. Organised by Positively Wellington Tourism, the aim is to help familiarise Wellingtonians
with what the coolest little capital in the world has to offer.
PWT Chief Executive David Perks said the initiative was a huge success last year and is expected to be the same in 2014.
“The event offers locals the opportunity to discover new places and keep up-to-date with the latest developments at
their favourite attractions.
“Last year, Wellington Zoo welcomed 7,000 people through its gate – setting a new record for its highest ever visitation
day, surpassing the previous record set on Wellington Open Day 2012 by over two-thirds.”
All money raised on the day will be donated to a charity of each participants’ choice. In 2013, over $37,000 was raised
via the gold coin donations as part of Wellington Open Day.
Mr Perks says due to the popularity of the event, traffic delays may be experienced.
“We recommend residents make use of the capital’s great public transport system where possible as parking will be
limited at each stop.”

Participating venues and attractions include: BNZ Museum, Carter Observatory, Circa Theatre, City Gallery, Holocaust
Centre of New Zealand, Motel Bar, Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, Museum of Wellington City and Sea, New
Zealand Cricket Museum, NZ Portrait Gallery, Old St Paul's, Reserve Bank Museum, Staglands Wildlife Reserve, The Library
Bar, Toi Pōneke Arts Centre, Walk Wellington, Wellington Cable Car, Wellington Ocean Sports, Wellington Zoo and
Zealandia.
