Church hall on the move in Innes Road

The Catholic Parish of St Francis of Assisi in Innes Road has a church on the move today (April 28).

The parish hall is currently being used as the church following the earthquake damage to the Our Lady of Fatima Church and subsequent demolition in January 2014.

The hall now has to be moved to the front of the site to make way for the redevelopment and expansion of the primary school buildings. This will allow for the formation of a new parish school by combining Our Lady of Fatima School and the “red-zoned” St Paul’s School, which was in Dallington. St Paul’s was extensively damaged in the September 2010 earthquake.

The redeveloped Innes Road site will also allow for the building of a new church for the parish. Currently the hall has five Masses on a Sunday to enable the congregation to attend Mass.

Ironically the hall was the first building on the site and was used as a church for many years before the Our Lady of Fatima Church was built.
