Smart Moves at Dunedin Public Libraries Set to Speed Up Checkout
Dunedin (Tuesday, 29 April 2014) – May sees dramatic changes at all Dunedin Public Libraries as new technology is
implemented to improve service standards for customers.
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) will be in place in each of the City’s Public Libraries from May 2014. RFID will
bring a much faster, more efficient means of checking out Library items, and should mean that customers will have far
less time standing in queues.
Each Library building will be fitted with new self-checkout desks which offer a range of service improvements,
including:
• The ability to checkout multiple items at once
• The option to pay fees/fines at the self-check machines by EFTPOS/coins
• DVD unlockers so customers can issue DVDs themselves without the need to queue for a member of staff
• A facility to email checkout receipts , minimising waste paper
This is a significant change for customers, so Library staff will be on-hand to assist with the initial transition to
the new system.
Along with the new self-checkout equipment inside the libraries, Mosgiel and City Libraries will also have new
technology for their out-of-hours returns slots, which will enable customers to receive a receipt for returns and have
returned items removed from their Library accounts instantly. The new returns slots have the advantage of being able to
detect Library items electronically, so they will only open for returned items – offering greater security from
vandalism for the Library collection.
As well as the many advantages offered to customers, the new RFID system will also mean that the Libraries can manage
collections more efficiently.
