Army Westland support welcomed by Federated Farmers

Federated Farmers appreciates the support of New Zealand Army engineers and personnel from 1 NZ Brigade, who are in Southern Westland to help the region recover from former Cyclone Ita’s devastation.

“Given it is ANZAC day, we are moved to have the New Zealand Army on the ground here in Westland to help us to recover,” says Katie Milne, Federated Farmers adverse events spokesperson and Westland provincial president.

“It feels like the cavalry has arrived but more accurately, it’s the Sappers.

“There are so many trees down that we know people want to crack on with tree clearance but this is a job for those who have the right kit to deal with wind damaged trees.

“Such trees are incredibly dangerous as they are unstable, unpredictable and can be under immense tension.

“It is why wind damaged trees should only be felled by suitably trained people like the Army engineers. Federated Farmers does not want to see people hurt or worse so if you’re not sure, it is best to either ask for advice or call in a forestry contractor or arboriculturalist.

“Federated Farmers appreciates the efforts that all professionals are going to right now.
