Council working across the city as weather eases
Christchurch City Council and associated
agencies continue to respond to the effects of the adverse
weather across the city. The rain appears to have peaked,
and the weather is expected to improve.
All river levels are running high, but are receding as the rainfall eases. The Heathcote River has overlapped in a few isolated locations and is currently 1.9 metres above normal levels. However, this is not expected to cause any flooding to homes in the area, although garages may be affected. The Avon River has peaked and is now receding. The Styx River, while high, doesn’t pose a problem.
There is Isolated flooding across the city, with Council contractors out clearing drains to assist surface water to drain away.
Areas of Heathcote Valley are experiencing particular difficulties with a huge amount of run-off water from the hills coming through the Bridle Path drain. Council contractors are out checking properties in the area.
Banks
Peninsula
Lyttelton has experienced a slip in Canterbury
Street, and contractors are on site working to make the area
safe.
Geotechnical engineers are out in the Port Hills checking small localised slips, and monitoring areas known to be susceptible to mass movement. They have not identified any significant risks so far.
Quarry Reservoir in
Lyttelton is running at a low level, after the water pipe
feeding the Reservoir was washed away. This will affect
water supplies to approximately 15 streets in Lyttelton.
Council contractors are providing a water tanker for people
affected, which will be parked outside the Lyttelton Fire
Station in London Street. Council staff will be knocking on
the doors of all homes affected. The following streets are
known to be impacted:
• Somes Road
•
Brenchley Road
• Cornwall Road (from number 23
upwards)
• Jacksons Road (number 54)
•
Ross Parade
• Days Road
• Canterbury
Street (from number 75 upwards)
• Oxford
Street
• St Davids Street (from number 78A
upwards)
• Reserve Terrace (from number 65
upwards)
• Foster Terrace
• Randolph
Terrace
• Gilmour Terrace
• Walkers
Road
• Harmans Road
The Council is asking Lyttelton residents and the rest of Banks Peninsula to conserve water as the adverse weather event will impact on local streams and affect water quality.
