Update: Council working across the city following overnight wet weather

The Christchurch City Council and associated agencies are responding to the adverse weather overnight.

Sixty five millimetres of rain fell across the city overnight and 180 millimetres in Akaroa. All river levels are running high. Heathcote River has flooded but Avon River and Styx River have not.

Rainfall throughout Christchurch and Banks Peninsula is now decreasing and should start clearing by around 9am. High tide was due at 7.51am at Ferrymead and will be low with no expected issues.

The Council waterways maintenance contractors are working throughout the city clearing grates and our roading contractors will be on-site where required.

The Christchurch City Council Call Centre is operating 24 hours a day, so if people have any concerns they can call on (03) 941 8999.

Road closures due to temporary traffic management:
The Council's Land Drainage and Roading teams have traffic management plans in place and will be working throughout the adverse weather. The following roads are closed:

* Flockton Street - Warrington to Archer
* Aylesford Street - Westminster Street to Hills Road
* Carrick Street - Flockton to Aylesford
* Thornton Street - Flockton to Aylesford
* Harrison Street - Flockton to Aylesford
* Speight Street - Flockton to Aylesford
* Archer Street - Flockton to Aylesford
* Edward Avenue - Woodville to Barbados
* Francis Avenue - Warrington to Westminster
* River Road - Banks to Medway
* Old Waimak Bridge - Detour in place around State Highway
* Hills Road - Warrington to Edgeware
* Canterbury Street
* State Highway 75 Little River - Akaroa now closed.
* Lyttelton Road Tunnel reduced to one lane.
* Stedley Place flooded.

Health and safety:
It is possible flood-waters on roads and parks may be contaminated. The Council says to avoid the water where possible or make sure you wash your hands and remove and wash all wet clothing.
