Council coordinating staff and contractors ahead of forecast wet weather
The Christchurch City Council is preparing to respond to a weather forecast that shows a period of extended rainfall
throughout Christchurch and Banks Peninsula, from 2pm this afternoon through to 8am tomorrow morning, when it is
expected to ease.
High tide tonight is around 7pm and is low so the Council is not expecting any significant flood issues in the coastal
areas.
Residents in low-lying areas are advised to take appropriate steps to protect their property and their valuables.
The Council waterways maintenance contractors have been clearing grates since this morning and our roading contractors
will be on-site where required over the next 24 hours sweeping and clearing kerb channels and sump. Depending on
rainfall intensity this waterways, kerb channel and sump clearing will continue as required in affected areas.
Road closures due to temporary traffic management:
The Council's Land Drainage and Roading teams have traffic management plans in place and will be working throughout the
wet weather to assist residents in low-lying areas.
The Council is asking drivers to be extra conscious of the surface flooding and to drive slowly and carefully in
affected areas. Bow-wash from vehicles is a major contributor to flood water entering houses.
Health and safety:
It is possible flood-waters on roads and parks may be contaminated, so the Council says to avoid the water where
possible or make sure you wash your hands and remove and wash any clothing that gets wet.
Banks Peninsula:
The Council is advising residents in Akaroa, Duvauchelle, Takamatua, Pigeon Bay and Little River to conserve water this
weekend throughout the forecast rainfall event.
