Council’s plan for the provision of swimming pools
Christchurch City Council’s Community Committee yesterday, Tuesday 15 April 2014, received a draft review of the Aquatic Facilities Plan.
Recreation and Sports Unit Manager, John Filsell, says the review covered the nature and condition of Council’s existing swimming facilities and compared this information to growth predictions based on up-to-date census data.
Community Committee Chair Yani Johanson says the draft review is comprehensive and timely.
“This draft is a first step in co-ordinating a strategic approach to update the Aquatic Facilities Plan. It is being done to align with Council's early preparation of the upcoming Long Term Plan which sets Council spending over the next 10 years from 1st of July 2015.
“There will be major challenges ahead to meet demand but the Council is committed to engaging and consulting with our residents over the best way of providing aquatic facilities going forward,” Cr Johanson says.
Deputy Chair, Cr Ali Jones believes it’s essential to get it right for the Christchurch Communities.
“It's key that our aquatic facilities support our communities effectively, providing amenity for serious athletes and people wanting to improve their fitness, as well as families who want somewhere to mix with others in their community and do things together for fun," Cr Jones says.
As part of that process the Committee decided to circulate the draft review for feedback from Community Boards once it has been work-shopped by Councillors next week.
